Penguin Facts

This is a cute project we made today.  We painted the edge of an inexpensive paper plate black.  The head of the penguin is the center of the first paper plate and the tummy is another paper plate.  I had them add one of the facts we have learned about penguins.  Precious!!

File Folder Games to the Rescue!!

I'm adding a few new file folder games for the kids to play while they are waiting for their classmates to finish their work.  These are perfect for small classrooms that don't have room for extra shelves for learning centers!

Teaching 2-digit Addition

We use a class store to teach and practice 2-digit addition. The kids enjoy making up their own addition facts by "shopping" at the store.  The prices will secretly go up when we start learning regrouping.

Two little girls were playing with the dollhouse during inside recess.  "Once upon a time a man and a woman got married.  Then they counted their money together.  Then they lived happily ever after..."

Compound Word Mittens (Partner Project)

This is a fun winter project that I LOVE!!  The children work in pairs to create a pair of mittens.

First, they traced a mitten from my template.  One child traced a left mitten.  The other child traced a right mitten.



Next, they wrote several compound words that were specific to winter.  These were written on the lines around the mittens.



 

Finally one person chose the pattern and the other chose the colors.  They tried to make a matching pair of mittens without speaking a word!!  I let them point, motion and make hand gestures to communicate.  They really enjoyed it!

Save those bottle caps!!

There are so many different learning centers and games you can make with those water bottle caps!  This is a spelling game I make each week to help the kids learn their spelling words. Their grades have improved greatly since I added this to the classroom!

I walked into the classroom with a huge stack of work papers from the copy room.  A little boy looked at it with big eyes and said, "I hope some of that is for tomorrow...."

Hello everybody and welcome to my blog!!!  I am quite new to the blogging scene so please be patient with me.

I am a first grade teacher at a small and reputable private school in Duncanville, Texas.  We take pride in our traditional approach to academic excellence and have produced many successful scholars throughout our 50+ years in business.  Personally, I have been employed at this wonderful school for only 28 of those years.

I have been married for 20 years and have an 18 year old daughter who is a Kilgore College Rangerette!  I have taught Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade and have subbed from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.

I decided to start this blog to give some insight into my personal teaching methods and tricks of the trade.  Feel free to stop by often and leave comments.
